What Coaching Is and Is Not
It is sometimes easier to state what coaching is not. Coaching is not
counselling, therapy or mentoring. Counselling and therapy look to the clients
past, to heal wounds and stop current problems. Mentoring involves someone who
has been there, done it and bought the T-shirt showing someone with less
experience the shortcuts to complete the task.
Personal Coaching is a non-directive approach to learning and development. This means
that a coach won’t give you the answers, tell you where to find them or make
suggestions. Advice is not in the remit of the truly powerful and courageous
coach!
Coaching takes clients from where they are now, right now in their lives and
asks them where do they want to be? What do they want to be? What do they want
to have? Once the current position is established the coach will guide the
client to find out what is right for them to do right now and how that can
happen. The only limit to what can be achieved through coaching is in your
imagination!
Coaching asks the client to participate, to be responsible and to take
responsibility for their own actions. And in there lies the key. Coaching
requires action, without it, coaching is not effective and each client must be
willing and committed to change and to take action for coaching to be
successful.
There is no judgement in coaching, there is no right or wrong. What you, as the
client, feel is most important to you, is what we work on and you have the
freedom to change that any time you wish. Coaching is also holistic. It is not a
compartmentalised practice; it can cover any and all areas of your life and can
address some very deeply held and limiting beliefs if the coaching relationship
is a trusting, honest and powerful one.
